Lake Blue Heron is a 52 acre lake situated in the Killearn Lakes community located in Tallahassee Florida.
This suburban lake drains into Lake Iamonia part of the Ochlockonee watershed. Lake Blue Heron has been heavily impacted by development over the past 20 being completely surrounded by homes and a golf course. As a result of the environmental degradation due to development activates around the lake and the adverse impact this has had on the Ochlockonee water shed the Northwest Florida Water Management District (NWFWMD) identified this water body as impacted surface water body needing address. The Killearn Lakes Homeowners Association (KLHOA) decided to undertake the challenge of applying for a Florida Forever Grant in an attempt to deal with the impact of 20 years of development on Lake Blue Heron.
The KLHOA was awarded a Florida Forever Grant through the NWFWMD with matching funding coming from Leon County. With the funds a community wide effort of lake restoration was undertaken. The Killearn Lakes Community has worked hard to implement a proactive restoration project that has included lake bottom dredging and integrated best management practices that included catch basins, aquatic and terrestrial native vegetative buffers removal of diseased trees and invasive plant species. Finally the KLHOA has included the entire community in becoming part of the solution to better surface water quality within their neighborhood.
This website is designed to allow visitors to explore the Clean Lakes Project for the Killearn Lakes Community and learn how a community made a difference for all who share this precious resource.
